Since July 1, 2014, the Local Government Act (NT) 2008 has required all Regional Councils to create and maintain Local Authorities in their towns and communities.
In East Arnhem, there are now a total of 9 Local Authorities, replacing the previous Community Advisory Boards (CABs) established under the same Act. They carry on the important role of the CABs by facilitating communication and consultation between the Local Government and the East Arnhem Region.
These Local Authorities serve as the community's voice, empowering local representatives, providing information to Elected Members and stakeholders, and respecting the cultural structures and complexity of traditional society.
East Arnhem Regional Council recognises the vital role of Local Authorities as forums for community engagement, playing a central part in establishing and maintaining an informed administrative environment.
During the Local Authority community meetings, guests from Council agencies can be invited to give a brief (10 minutes) report on their agency's operations. They have the chance to share both challenges and successes. This helps the Local Authority members to gain a better understanding of the work carried out by Council agencies.
Furthermore, every agenda includes a public question time, allowing community members to raise any topics or concerns they would like the Local Authority members to address. This ensures that the voices and issues of the community are heard and given due attention.
To present at any of our 9 Local Authority meetings, East Arnhem Regional Council requires all organisations to submit a 'request to present' at least 10 days before the meeting.
